The Next Phase of App Growth in India Needs More Than New Acquisition Channels

The article explores OEM-led app acquisition in India, emphasizing accurate attribution, user engagement, and retention over install volumes to drive sustainable, measurable app growth.

The Next Phase of App Growth in India Needs More Than New Acquisition Channels

Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India, November 7, 2026 pressrelease.in - The mobile application market in India is suffering from a problem that cannot simply be fixed by adding more advertising networks to the media plan. The situation has presented marketers with the critical task of deciding the effect of new channels (apart from just installation numbers) on user acquisition. For many years, the strategies for user acquisition used traditional advertising networks, search channels, and social media platforms. These are still important, but the dependence on a few established channels limits the scope for experimentation. The ecosystems of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) present another option for the app discovery process. However, the level of their effectiveness will be determined more by advertising effectiveness than by the number of available advertising channels. OEM Ecosystems Deserve a Place in India's App Growth Strategy

In India's digital economy, smartphone makers play a vital role. Apart from the production of devices, some of the manufacturers have developed app distribution systems which connect users to various digital solutions.

The operation of the companies becomes clearer while assessing the smartphone market in India. As per the IDC report for Q2 2026, vivo led India's smartphone market by unit shipments with a market share of 18.4%.

That gives the company access to multiple viable advertising options, but the number of phones sold does not indicate the number of customers that can be targeted through advertising or how well they will react.

The device manufacturers should therefore follow the idea that advertising initiatives are perceived as an additional method to reach audiences.

The possibility that is presented includes clarification of who can be reached through advertising and evaluation of the impact on sales. The examples from recent practice demonstrate how advertisements can be integrated into the overall measurement process.

For marketers, the more important issue would be whether it has become possible to effectively attract either new users or prospects through the new advertising channels at an affordable price.

More Acquisition Channels Create Greater Measurement Complexity

One of the implications of utilizing a media mix is that it will cause operational issues and, at the same time, help in the formation of business opportunities. Every advertising industry has its unique identifiers for campaigns, tracking methods, definitions of conversions, and, finally, reporting systems. Therefore, it becomes hard to compare advertisements across different media.

Let’s take a case where a marketer runs campaigns across various advertisement channels that include social networks, PPC, affiliation, and an OEM ecosystem. Though different channels keep reporting their installations of the app, from time to time, it becomes impossible to compare results due to attribution windows and event definitions.

Advertisers who are entering an OEM environment must define measurement requirements beforehand, instead of trying to reconcile incompatible reports after campaigns are over.

An Install Is Only the Beginning of the Growth Story

The installation statistics show some level of acquisition knowledge but do not reveal any information about the real value of the acquired users. There can be big differences in the effectiveness of two campaigns with equal installations – one may generate a client base of registered, highly active users who perform transactions, while another may obtain nonactive users leaving the application after the first use.

According to Apptrove’s August 2026 research on mobile user acquisition based on 13.6 million installations across 265 apps, organic users have been found to generate 63.1 in-app events per installation as opposed to 33.4 in the case of paid users.

This means that having the app installed is not enough of an indication of its user quality. Thus, now it is necessary to define the behavior of users obtained through different acquisition sources.

Another aspect of retention is that it helps examine the ways of retention in a cohort-based view.

Making Accountability Part of OEM Campaign Planning

Accountability is a must before a single ad is run in the market. At first, advertisers should understand what it is they want to achieve in the market. E.g., the installation amount is right for the awareness goal, while registrations, sales, retention, or revenues are for performance-based campaigns.

Next, it is necessary to set up attribution rules and define events to track after the installation. Before scaling investment, the team should check if tracking works well, identify potential discrepancies, and evaluate the quality of traffic.

Also, comparisons should take into account campaign goals, audience, attribution windows, and timeframes of analysis. A lower acquisition cost is not necessarily beneficial if the users acquired through this method do not contribute to profits.

It is also important to distinguish between attributable performance and incremental impact. Whenever possible, controlled experiments will help to find out whether spending more money on advertising yields results that would not be achieved without this spending.

This method turns OEM advertising from a means of checking placement opportunities into a channel that can be assessed in terms of specific business objectives.

The Next Growth Advantage Is Measurable Value

App marketers in India have valid reasons to investigate the chances of OEM-led acquisition processes. The wider variety of channels offered will foster experimentation and lower dependency on any one platform.

Nevertheless, broadening the acquisition mix without improving the monitoring process leads to extra complications, not guaranteed growth.

The firms that will thrive in new advertising environments will be those that have precise conversion objectives, analyze post-install customer behavior, and hold channels to well-defined performance benchmarks.

Ultimately, sustainable app growth depends not on the number of channels to access users but on the quality and effectiveness of acquired users.
