Hard-Fought Recovery: 21-Year-Old Fighter Makes Steady Comeback After Five Months in ICU at Parul Sevashram Hospital

Vadodara, November 18, 2025 (pressrelease.in) — Vadodara-based Parul Sevashram Hospital shares an inspiring story of a remarkable

recovery of a 21-year-old patient, battling both severe Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) and a

multi-drug-resistant pneumonia, who overcame a gruelling five-month fight in the ICU, with

the help of unwavering medical commitment by the hospital.

Five months prior, the patient was admitted to the ICU, on a ventilator, in critical condition.

The patient was unable to breathe or move because of advanced Guillain-Barré Syndrome

and severe multidrug-resistant pneumonia. What followed was a difficult and uncertain

journey marked by recurrent infections, a collapsed lung, urinary issues, and several

attempts to liberate him from the ventilator. During this time, the hospital multidisciplinary

team worked nonstop. Antibiotics were provided continuously, along with thorough nursing

assessments, prompt management of complications, and nutrition to help restore his

strength and recover from his illness, as mentioned by the treating physician Dr Mehul

Marwadi.

Discussions with patient’s father, a daily wage laborer, revealed the profound gratitude for

the hospitals holistic approach. The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) scheme

covered our extended ICU stay, which would have been impossible otherwise, he explained.

but what truly made the difference was Parul Sevashram Hospitals generosity in extending

free treatment beyond the schemes limits. Without that compassion, we couldn't have

afforded the specialized care he needed.

Today, after four months, he is completely off the ventilator, his tracheostomy tube has been

removed, and he can eat independently. He is even regaining his mobility with minimal

assistance. With his phenomenal recovery, he stands as a beacon of hope and an

unbreakable human spirit.  “ This is a case of extreme persistence and perseverance, and

how family plays a vital role in the process of healing. It also demonstrates the expertise of

our team and their innovative approaches, reinforcing our mission to deliver world-class

care, even during the worst circumstances”, said Dr Misbah Rangwala, Intensivist and

Critical Care Specialist at Parul Sevashram Hospital.

“Such stories remind us of why we do what we do,” said Geetika Madan Patel, MD, Medical

Director, Parul Sevashram Hospital. “Recovery is about so much more than treatment itself.

It is about trust, teamwork, and the belief that even in our darkest moments, healing can be

possible. We are proud of our team and thankful to the family for their unwavering support.”

Parul Sevashram Hospital is a leading educational institution under the Parul Institute of

Medical Sciences and Research. Along with commitment to clinical care, it also ensures that

financial constraints never stand in the way of this patient’s treatment. Through the Pradhan

Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) scheme, they make sure the only focus remains on what

matters most, which is the patient’s healing and recovery. The hospital continues to advance

critical care for some of the most challenging neurological and infectious cases, offering

hope to patients across Gujarat and beyond.
